Jp1.14 a Preferred Scale for Warm Core Instability in a Non-convective Moist Basic State

چکیده
2. Warm core systems are equivalently barotropic because the thickness and mass fields align as vertically-stacked structures. The resulting lack of thickness advection by the geostrophic wind prevents any conversion of zonal available potential energy (PM) to eddy available potential energy (PE) by the geostrophic wind thus precluding any quasigeostrophic baroclinic instability for warm core systems.

A Preferred Scale for Warm-Core Instability in a Nonconvective Moist Basic State
The existence, scale, and growth rates of subsynoptic-scale warm-core circulations are investigated with a simple parameterization for latent heat release in a nonconvective basic state using a linear two-layer shallow-water model. For a range of baroclinic flows from moderate to high Richardson number, conditionally stable lapse rates approaching saturated adiabats consistently yield the most ...
متن کاملFactors Governing Cellular Convection in Orographic Precipitation
The development of shallow cellular convection in warm orographic clouds is investigated through idealized numerical simulations of moist flow over topography using a cloud-resolving numerical model. Buoyant instability, a necessary element for moist convection, is found to be diagnosed most accurately through analysis of the moist Brunt–Väisälä frequency (Nm) rather than the vertical profile o...
متن کاملMulticloud Models for Organized Tropical Convection: Enhanced Congestus Heating
Despite the recent advances in supercomputing, the current general circulation models (GCMs) poorly represent the large-scale variability associated with tropical convection. Multicloud model convective parameterizations based on three cloud types (congestus, deep, and stratiform), introduced recently by the authors, have been revealed to be very useful in representing key features of organized...
متن کاملMoist Convection and the Thermal Stratification of the Extratropical Troposphere
Simulations with an aquaplanet general circulation model show that sensible and latent heat transport by large-scale eddies influences the extratropical thermal stratification over a wide range of climates, even in relatively warm climates with small meridional surface temperature gradients. Variations of the lapse rate toward which the parameterized moist convection in the model relaxes atmosp...
متن کاملA Moisture-Stratiform Instability for Convectively Coupled Waves
A simple model of two vertical modes is constructed and analyzed to reveal the basic instability mechanisms of convectively coupled waves. The main novelty of this model is a convective parameterization based on the quasi-equilibrium concept and simplified for a model of two vertical modes. It hypothesizes 1) the approximate invariance of the difference between saturation moist static energy in...
